slongo:

Didn’t know what to expect going in. Banking on a museum’s track record to potentially misrepresent comics art. The ’90s. But The Oakland Museum seemed to get it right.

Clowes’ art is perfect for a gallery show. Ultra-technical and just.. huge. I couldn’t get over how big all of the pages were. Specific pages, like that first image, were just fucking gigantic. I’m almost positive that every page in the show was bigger in scale than any comic I’ve ever worked on. Ever. And just like, the crazy amount of minor corrections and collaged adjustments. (Close-up on the Eightball cover where the collar is re-pasted. New eye, new elbow. Redone title.) The definition of craft. The layouts and composition were just so, so precise.

And I guess I feel like that brand of technicality is the least trendy thing to do in comics atm. So, if for that reason alone, it’s worth exploring. I left the show feeling like I wanted to draw an extremely personal comic on a giant illustration board. Perfectly ruled out, beautiful layout.. then just obliterate the in-panel drawings. Cause I can’t draw like Clowes and I don’t want to. But feeling like there’s something to learn.
